Stephen King has long been a vocal critic of the modern obsession with spoilers, often dismissing the fear of knowing plot twists as overly dramatic and, in many cases, a sign of emotional immaturity. In his 2023 article for The Guardian, in which he pays tribute to the late Daphne du Maurier’s masterful storytelling, King takes a refreshingly candid stance: spoilers don’t ruin stories—they’re inevitable, and often, they’re not even the point.
He argues that the true power of a story lies not in secrecy, but in the emotional and psychological impact it creates. "The moment you know how a story ends doesn’t diminish the journey," King writes. "It’s the journey—the dread, the tension, the way the characters' choices echo in the silence after the final page—that matters."
King draws a striking comparison between du Maurier’s tightly wound suspense in Rebecca and his own approach to storytelling. He points out that in du Maurier’s work, the real horror isn’t in the twist or the revelation, but in the atmosphere, the psychological unraveling, and the slow creep of unease. "You know what happens in Rebecca almost from the beginning—there’s a dead wife, a house full of ghosts, a second wife who feels like an imposter. But that doesn’t make it any less terrifying," he notes.
He scoffs at fans who claim they "can’t read" a book or "won’t watch" a movie if they’ve heard the ending. "If you’re so fragile that a spoiler breaks your emotional investment, maybe you’re not ready to read a novel or watch a film," King says, adding with characteristic wit: "I once read the ending of The Shining before I’d even finished the first chapter—and I still spent two weeks sleeping with the light on."
For King, the fear of spoilers reflects a deeper cultural anxiety about losing control. "We’re not afraid of knowing what happens—we’re afraid of not being surprised, of being cheated out of a manufactured moment of shock. But the best stories aren’t about shock. They’re about truth."
In short, King doesn’t just tolerate spoilers—he celebrates them. He sees them not as enemies of narrative pleasure, but as part of the natural conversation about stories. And in the end, he reminds readers: "The real horror isn’t knowing the ending. It’s not reading at all."
