Chilean Pokémon TCG World Champion Meets President Boric: A Celebration of Skill and Sportsmanship

Fernando Cifuentes, the 18-year-old Pokémon TCG World Champion, received an extraordinary honor: a meeting with the President of Chile at the Palacio de La Moneda. This momentous occasion, which also included nine other Chilean competitors, involved a welcoming reception, a shared meal, and a celebratory photo session. The Chilean government expressed immense pride in Cifuentes and his fellow competitors who reached the second day of the World Championships. Government officials joined President Boric in congratulating the talented players.

President Boric's Instagram post highlighted the positive influence of trading card games on youth, emphasizing the collaborative and friendly spirit fostered within these competitive communities.

Cifuentes received a unique commemorative framed card featuring himself and his championship Pokémon, Iron Thorns. The card's inscription reads: "Fernando and Iron Thorns. Ability: World Champion. Fernando Cifuentes, from Iquique, created history as the first Chilean World Champion at the 2024 Pokémon World Championships Masters Finals in Honolulu, Hawaii."

President Boric's Pokémon fandom adds a unique layer to the story. A known Pokémon enthusiast (with a fondness for Squirtle, revealed during his 2021 campaign), he received a Squirtle plushie from the Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs following Cifuentes' victory.

A Thrilling Path to Victory

Cifuentes' journey to the championship wasn't without drama. He narrowly escaped elimination in the Top 8 after his opponent, Ian Robb, was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct. This unexpected turn of events led to a semifinal match against Jesse Parker, which Cifuentes won, ultimately securing the $50,000 grand prize over runner-up Seinosuke Shiokawa.
