Pokémon TCG Pocket Dev Introduces Trade Tokens, Leaves Controversial Feature Unaddressed

In a move to address ongoing concerns, Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket developer Creatures Inc. has generously provided players with 1,000 Trade Tokens upon logging in today. These tokens, sufficient for just two significant trades, come as the company continues to explore solutions for the game's controversial trading mechanics. While players found the tokens in their Gift menu without any accompanying message, Creatures Inc. took to X/Twitter to express gratitude for the community's feedback and patience. The trading feature, introduced last week, had sparked a wave of criticism, with the developer being labeled "hilariously toxic," "predatory," and "downright greedy."

The Pokémon TCG Pocket's trading system is layered with restrictions, including limitations on opening packs, Wonder Picking, and now trading, all of which encourage spending real money. The introduction of Trade Tokens adds another layer of restriction, requiring players to delete five cards from their collection to trade just one card of the same rarity, a move that has been widely criticized for its high cost.

It's been eight days since the trading feature was rolled out, and the backlash has been significant. Creatures Inc. had previously hinted at the feature almost three weeks ago, acknowledging fans' concerns and inviting them to provide feedback once it was live. Despite assurances that the system would be better received, the reality has been quite different. In response to the criticism, Creatures Inc. admitted that "some of the restrictions put in place are preventing players from being able to casually enjoy" the trading aspect of the game.

The company promised to address these issues by introducing required items as rewards in upcoming events. However, the recently launched Cresselia ex Drop Event on February 3 failed to include these promised rewards, further frustrating the player base. Many fans argue that the trading system is designed primarily to boost revenue for Pokémon TCG Pocket, which reportedly earned $200 million in its first month before trading was even implemented.

The inability to trade cards of 2 Star rarity or higher is seen as a clear tactic to encourage spending, as players would otherwise be able to trade for missing cards without needing to spend $10, $100, or more on random chances to obtain them. One player reportedly spent around $1,500 just to complete the first set, with the third set in three months arriving last week.
