Following the reviews, we'll highlight the day's best new releases and round up the latest sales, both new and expiring. Let's get started!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99)

Sequels to long-dormant franchises are all the rage, mirroring Hollywood's trends. Nintendo's surprise revival of Famicom Detective Club, a series largely known in the West through a brief remake, is a testament to this. This new entry marks the first brand-new Famicom Detective Club adventure of the millennium!

The challenge lies in balancing faithfulness to the original with modern sensibilities. Emio – The Smiling Man opts for a visual upgrade similar to the recent remakes, while expanding on the narrative. The result is a unique blend: modern visuals meet classic gameplay. While the visuals are top-notch, and the story pushes boundaries beyond its 90s counterpart, the gameplay remains old-school, significantly impacting the overall enjoyment.

The game centers on a student's murder, echoing unsolved cases from 18 years prior. The legend of Emio, a killer promising eternal smiles, adds intrigue. Is it a copycat, a resurfaced killer, or just a legend? The police are baffled, so the Utsugi Detective Agency is called in. Through investigation and interrogation, you unravel the truth.

The gameplay involves searching for clues, questioning suspects (often requiring multiple interactions), and connecting the dots. Similar to Ace Attorney's investigation segments, this style might feel tedious for some. Specific logical connections could benefit from clearer guidance. However, within the context of similar games, Emio doesn't significantly deviate from the norm.

Despite some minor narrative criticisms, the story is largely engaging, suspenseful, and well-written. Certain plot points may not resonate with all players, but detailing them would spoil the experience. This is a mystery best enjoyed fresh. The strengths outweigh the weaknesses, and when the plot intensifies, it truly captivates.

Emio – The Smiling Man is a departure from typical Nintendo fare, showcasing polished execution. While the mechanics adhere closely to the originals, and the pacing occasionally falters, it remains an enjoyable mystery adventure. Welcome back, Detective Club!

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate ($29.99)

The Switch is building a solid library of TMNT games. From classic Konami titles in the Cowabunga Collection to modern takes like Shredder's Revenge and Wrath of the Mutants, there's now Splintered Fate, offering a console-style experience.

This game blends the beat 'em up action of TMNT with the roguelite elements of Hades. Playable solo or with up to four players locally or online, the multiplayer significantly enhances the experience. The single-player mode is adequate, but teamwork makes the game shine.

Shredder's schemes and a mysterious power endanger Splinter, forcing the Turtles into action. Fight enemies, use tactical dashes, collect perks, and upgrade your abilities. Death sends you back to the lair to start anew. It's a familiar roguelite formula, elevated by the TMNT theme. While not groundbreaking, it's well-executed.

Splintered Fate isn't a must-have for everyone, but TMNT fans will appreciate this unique take. The well-implemented multiplayer is a welcome addition to a genre usually played solo. Other roguelite titles on the Switch may offer more innovation, but Splintered Fate holds its own.

SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5
