2XKO Hopes to Revolutionize Tag-Team fighting Games
Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This article explores its innovative tag team mechanics and the recently available playable demo.
2XKO's Unique Tag Team Approach

Demonstrated at EVO 2024, 2XKO introduces "Duo Play," a fresh take on the 2v2 formula. Instead of one player controlling both characters, two players team up, each controlling a champion. This results in thrilling four-player matches (2v2), or even intense 2v1 showdowns. Each team features a "Point" character and an "Assist" character.
The innovative tag system includes:
- Assist Actions: The Point character can summon the Assist for special moves.
- Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist characters instantly swap roles.
- Dynamic Save: The Assist can intervene to break up enemy combos.
Unlike some tag fighters where a single knockout ends the match, 2XKO requires both players on a team to be defeated. Even defeated champions remain active as Assists, offering strategic depth.
Strategic Synergy with "Fuses"
Beyond character customization, 2XKO introduces "Fuses," synergy options that modify team playstyles. The demo showcased five Fuses:
- PULSE: Rapid attacks for powerful combos.
- FURY: Increased damage and dash cancels below 40% health.
- FREESTYLE: Perform two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
- DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate moves with your partner.
- 2X ASSIST: Enhance your partner's abilities with multiple Assist actions.
Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse System's ability to boost player expression and enable devastating coordinated attacks.
Champion Selection and Alpha Playtest

The demo featured six champions (Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi), each with movesets reflecting their League of Legends counterparts. While popular characters like Jinx and Katarina were absent from the Alpha Lab Playtest, their inclusion is planned for the future.
2XKO, a free-to-play fighter for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 (launching in 2025), is currently accepting registrations for its Alpha Lab Playtest (August 8-19). More details on the playtest and registration can be found in the linked article. This innovative title promises to redefine the tag-team fighting game experience.
