"30 Key Highlights from Nintendo Switch 2 Reveal Trailer"

May 04,25(6 months ago)

It’s *finally* here. After months of speculation and rumor, Nintendo has unveiled its latest innovation in gaming: the Nintendo Switch 2. The name may be simple, but don't let that fool you. While it may appear similar to its predecessor at first glance, a closer look reveals a plethora of intriguing enhancements and changes. We've cataloged 30 fascinating details from the reveal trailer that showcase how Nintendo has evolved its iconic hybrid console.

From new face buttons to innovative ways of using the Joy-Con, let’s dive into everything the Nintendo Switch 2 has to offer.

Nintendo Switch 2 - First Look

28 Images01 - The Switch 2 maintains a similar form factor to its predecessor but is slightly larger. The main console unit and Joy-Con controllers have increased in size, with the entire console estimated to be about 15% bigger than the original Switch.

02 - The vibrant colors of the original Joy-Con have been replaced with a sleek, uniform dark grey, reminiscent of the Steam Deck, giving the console a more sophisticated look.

03 - Color hasn't been entirely eliminated, though. The Switch 2 pays homage to the original's red and blue controllers with colorful rings around each analog stick, extending to the inner edges of the console and Joy-Con. This not only looks stylish but serves as a color-coding system for easy assembly.

04 - The Joy-Con attachment method has been updated. Instead of sliding onto rails, they now slot directly into the device with a protruding connector on the main unit. Rumors suggest that magnets, similar to Apple's Magsafe system, might hold them in place.

05 - Each Joy-Con features a new trigger system on the rear that releases the controller from the main unit. Squeezing the trigger activates a piston-like mechanism inside the Joy-Con, pushing it away from the console.

06 - The front of the Joy-Cons retains the classic control layout with offset analog sticks, direction buttons, and A, B, X, Y face buttons. The Plus and Minus buttons are at the top, while the capture and Home buttons remain at the bottom.

07 - A new, unlabelled button sits below the Home button, its function currently a mystery.

08 - The L and R shoulder buttons are in their usual spots, with the ZL and ZR triggers below them. These appear deeper and more rounded, promising improved comfort and ease of use.

09 - The analog sticks feature a low-profile design with a smaller inner ring radius and taller rims for enhanced thumb grip.

10 - While the NFC Amiibo interface isn't visible on the right Joy-Con, it might still be present as it was on the original Switch. However, the IR sensor from the original right Joy-Con is absent, likely due to its limited use in games.

11 - The internal edges of the Joy-Con retain the SL and SR buttons, allowing each to function as a standalone controller. These buttons are significantly larger, up to four times the size of those on the original Switch, for improved usability.

12 - The strip of four green LEDs that indicate player assignment has been moved to the forward-facing edge of the connector strip.

13 - The connector port between the SL and SR buttons includes a Sync button for pairing the Joy-Con with the console.

14 - Above the connector is a small, clear lens, potentially a laser sensor similar to those in computer mice, hinting at new ways to use the Joy-Con.

15 - The wrist-straps are redesigned with matching red and blue colors to complement the Joy-Con's inner color splash.

16 - The main console unit boasts a larger screen, though not as expansive as the Switch OLED model. The display technology remains undisclosed but could be either LED or OLED.

17 - The top edge features slightly redesigned power and volume buttons, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a ventilation grill split into three vents.

18 - The Game Card slot remains on the top edge, ensuring backward compatibility with original Switch games.

19 - A new USB-C port next to the headphone jack on the top edge raises questions about its purpose, as the console also has a bottom-mounted USB-C port for docking and charging.

20 - Downward-firing speakers replace the original rear-facing ones, promising better sound quality.

21 - A new kickstand system spans the entire length of the rear, offering multiple adjustable angles and rubber feet for stability.

22 - The Switch 2 can be docked to connect to a TV, with a dock design nearly identical to the original but featuring rounded corners and a prominent Switch 2 logo.

23 - A controller peripheral that the Joy-Cons slot into is included, similar to the original Switch's, though hopefully with improved ergonomics.

24 - The reveal trailer teases a new Mario Kart game, boasting a starting line for 24 racers, doubling the original's capacity.

25 - A new track, "Mario Kart - Mario Bros. Circuit," appears to be set in an American-themed environment with open spaces and off-road sections.

26 - The game roster includes ten characters: Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, Yoshi, Toad, Donkey Kong, Daisy, Rosalina, and Wario.

27 - The Switch 2 supports backward compatibility for older Switch games, though some may not be supported due to incompatible peripherals.

28 - The console is set to launch in 2025, likely after June.

29 - More details, including a potential release date, will be shared during a Nintendo Direct on April 2nd.

30 - Following the Direct, fans can experience the console at the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience, a global tour from April to June. Starting in New York and Paris on April 4th, the tour will visit cities like London, Berlin, Melbourne, Tokyo, and Seoul. Entry is open to Nintendo Account holders via a free ballot, with registration opening on January 17th.

These are the 30 key details from the Switch 2 announcement trailer. Stay tuned to IGN for more updates on the Nintendo Switch 2 in the coming months.
