Baldur's Gate 4 Was Playable But Ultimately Abandoned by Larian
Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a follow-up to BG3.
A Playable BG3 Sequel and DLC Abandoned
Larian CEO Swen Vincke confirmed in a PC Gamer interview that a playable sequel, potentially Baldur's Gate 4, existed. While functional, the team felt it wasn't meeting their standards and the prospect of years more development on a similar project was unappealing. A planned Baldur's Gate 3 DLC was also abandoned for the same reasons. Vincke stated the team was ready to pursue original ideas.
High Morale and New Projects
The decision to abandon the BG3 sequel and DLC has boosted team morale, according to Vincke. Larian is now focused on two unannounced projects, described as their most ambitious yet. The team will complete a final major patch for BG3 in Fall 2024, including mod support, cross-play, and new endings.
Future of Divinity Series
With Larian moving on from the Baldur's Gate franchise, attention turns to their Divinity series. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 sequel is expected, Vincke clarified that their next Divinity project will be unexpected.
