Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced that it is now fully focused on its next project, entering a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. While fans eagerly await Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, expected to be released this year, Larian has made it clear that its "full attention" is on what's coming next.

Last week, Swen Vincke, the head of Larian, took to Twitter to reflect on the studio's journey with Baldur’s Gate 3, which has enjoyed immense success both critically and commercially. Vincke teased that "the story ain't over yet," hinting at exciting developments on the horizon.

In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that Swen and the team's full attention is now on crafting their next title, and they are moving into a "media blackout" phase. What we do know is that Larian's next game will not be a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 nor another Dungeons & Dragons title. Instead, it will be a brand new game, as the studio was unable to generate internal enthusiasm for a follow-up to Baldur’s Gate.

In November 2023, Vincke spoke vaguely about the studio's next project, expressing excitement and a desire to push boundaries, especially after Baldur’s Gate 3 received numerous nominations at The Game Awards. He hinted at something innovative and groundbreaking.

Additionally, in July 2023, before the launch of Baldur’s Gate 3, Vincke mentioned to IGN that a sequel to the Divinity: Original Sin series is on the cards, though fans should not expect it immediately. He emphasized the need for the team to take a creative break after completing Baldur’s Gate 3, highlighting the dedication and effort of the 400 developers involved.

While a return to the Divinity universe is planned for the future, Larian's next project appears to be a departure from their established fantasy RPG roots. Speculation abounds about whether this new game will explore science fiction, a modern-day setting, or perhaps even venture into a new genre altogether.
