Bethesda Game Studios has recently provided clarity on why the newly released The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered by Virtuos is not considered a remake. In a detailed post on X/Twitter, the studio behind the iconic fantasy RPG series explained the distinction between a remaster and a remake, emphasizing their approach with Oblivion Remastered.

"We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology," Bethesda stated. This approach aims to preserve the essence of the original game while enhancing it with modern visual and gameplay improvements.

The clarification comes as fans are getting their first official look at and hands-on experience with Oblivion Remastered. Available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, as well as through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, the remaster features significant visual upgrades and gameplay tweaks. Notable changes include the ability to sprint and a new level-up system that blends elements from both the original Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

Despite the numerous modifications, ranging from redesigned sewer grates to more substantial gameplay additions, Bethesda remains firm on classifying Oblivion Remastered as a remaster rather than a remake. The studio began working on this project in 2021 and has meticulously upgraded various aspects of the game.

“We looked at every part and carefully upgraded it,” Bethesda continued. “But most of all, we never wanted to change the core. It’s still a game from a previous era and should feel like one."

Bethesda expressed gratitude to both new and returning players, hoping that everyone stepping out of the Imperial sewer feels like they're experiencing the game anew. The studio's message resonated with fans, many of whom are excited to revisit or discover the world of Cyrodiil.
