Ever since its unveiling, Marvel Rivals has drawn immediate comparisons to Blizzard's Overwatch. At first glance, the similarities are striking. Both games are competitive multiplayer hero shooters, with Marvel Rivals featuring Marvel's iconic heroes and villains, much like Overwatch uses its unique cast of characters. Consequently, Blizzard has revealed plans for significant changes to Overwatch 2 in 2025. The roadmap includes expected new content, but more importantly, it promises a fundamental transformation of the game's core mechanics, introducing hero perks and bringing back the beloved loot boxes.

It's been nearly nine years since the original Overwatch debuted in 2016, and over two-and-a-half years since the launch of Overwatch 2. Although Blizzard keeps Overwatch player numbers under wraps, data from Steam shows that Overwatch 2's concurrent player count has hit historic lows since its 2023 launch on the platform, with a peak of just 37,046 players over the last 24 hours.

In contrast, Marvel Rivals continues to dominate, maintaining its status among the top 10 most-played games on Steam, with a peak of 310,287 concurrent players in the same period.

Overwatch 2's standing on Steam is further complicated by its 'mostly negative' user review rating. In August 2023, it even became the worst user-reviewed game on Steam, primarily due to backlash over its monetization model. This followed Blizzard's controversial decision to update the premium Overwatch into a free-to-play sequel, effectively making the original game unplayable in 2022.
