Ed Boon Hints at T-1000 Fatality and Future DLC for Mortal Kombat 1
Ed Boon, the development chief of Mortal Kombat 1, has recently shared exciting news on social media. He unveiled a sneak peek of the upcoming guest character T-1000 Terminator's Fatality and hinted at more "future DLC" to come. This announcement coincides with the release of another guest character, Conan the Barbarian, marking a significant milestone as Mortal Kombat 1 has now surpassed five million copies sold, up from the previously reported four million.
Boon shared a short clip on Twitter showcasing one of T-1000's Fatalities, which is bound to thrill fans of Terminator 2. The Fatality features the T-1000 driving a smashed-up truck into his opponent, echoing the iconic chase scene from the film where the T-1000 pursues Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator and Edward Furlong's John Connor. Boon's accompanying comment, "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!" has sparked speculation among the Mortal Kombat community about potential new DLC characters beyond the current set.
T-1000 Terminator is the last character to be added to Mortal Kombat 1 as part of the Khaos Reigns expansion, following other fighters such as Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. With the success of the game and the completion of this expansion, fans are eager to learn if NetherRealm Studios plans to introduce a third set of DLC characters, or a Kombat Pack 3.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company, continues to show strong support for the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav announced plans to focus heavily on four key titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them. Additionally, in September, Boon confirmed that while NetherRealm had already decided on its next game three years prior, they remain committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for the foreseeable future.
Speculation about NetherRealm's future projects often circles back to the Injustice series, a DC fighting game franchise. While neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has confirmed the next installment, the first game, Injustice: Gods Among Us, was released in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. After Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, fans expected an alternating pattern between Mortal Kombat and Injustice, but the studio surprised everyone with Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023 instead.
In an interview with IGN in June 2023, Boon discussed the decision to release another Mortal Kombat game, citing factors like the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer version of the Unreal game engine. Mortal Kombat 11 used Unreal Engine 3, while Mortal Kombat 1 runs on Unreal Engine 4. Boon emphasized the team's priority on safety during the pandemic and their desire to leverage the new graphics engine. He also reassured fans that the door is not closed on the Injustice franchise, indicating potential future developments in that series as well.
