Hollow Knight Fans' Hopes for Silksong Rekindled

Thanks to a Tweet and a Slice of Cake

The Hollow Knight community was swept into another round of speculation thanks to co-creator William Pellen's activity on X (formerly Twitter) around the time of the Switch 2 reveal on January 16, 2025.

On January 15, Pellen posted, "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow." This was widely interpreted as a hint toward the leaked Switch 2 announcement the following day. While the perennial question about Silksong's release arose, it was Pellen's next action that truly fueled the fire.

On January 16, 2025, the Switch 2 announcement confirmed an upcoming Direct presentation scheduled for April 2, 2025. An observant fan noticed Pellen had changed his profile picture to an image of a slice of cake that same day. A reverse image search revealed the photo was from a Bon Appetit article for a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe, originally published on April 2, 2024.

Someone with a username matching Pellen's had also commented "mmmm tasty" on that recipe article. Dedicated fans combed through the comments section, finding several remarks linking the cake to Silksong. One user vowed, "if we get real silksong news by april 2nd 2025, I will bake this cake." Another review read, "Loved the silky texture. This goes direct ly in my favourite recipes"—a potential nod to both the game and the upcoming Nintendo Direct.

It's important to note that we cannot definitively confirm the recipe commenter was Pellen himself. However, his profile picture change on X is undeniable. While he is clearly hinting at *something*, that something could ultimately be nothing at all.

The Original Hollow Knight: Silksong Announcement Five Years Prior

Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced on February 14, 2019, with planned releases for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, PC, and Xbox. The sequel follows the adventures of Hornet in a new kingdom "ruled by silk and song."

In December 2019, developer Team Cherry shared a preview of the soundtrack, composed by Christopher Larkin. Following this update, the team went largely silent for over two years.

The silence was broken in February 2022, when Pellen reassured fans that development was ongoing and that more information would be shared as the release date approached. Later that June, a new trailer was shown at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, revealing fresh gameplay and confirming a day-one launch on Xbox Game Pass.

Despite hopes for a 2023 release, Team Cherry's marketing lead, Matthew Griffin, confirmed a delay in May 2023. "We had planned to release in the 1st half of 2023, but development is still continuing," he explained. "We're excited by how the game is shaping up, and it's gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can."

Now, over five years since its announcement, Hollow Knight's dedicated fanbase remains strong, actively scouring forums for any news. Beyond the delay confirmation, however, the developers have shared little, only reiterating that work continues on the project.
