Capcom has subtly teased Resident Evil 9 in a way that's easy to miss but hard to ignore. To celebrate reaching an impressive 10 million players, the Resident Evil 4 development team shared a celebratory video on social media on April 25. The video features Ada Wong in a hushed conversation with a legendary villain, then shifts to Leon, surrounded by a horde of infected wearing party hats, casually making their way towards a church.

The scene then transitions to a rock song, with Dr. Salvador humorously strumming his chainsaw as if it were a guitar, while Leon is seen fist-pumping in excitement. In the background, a rustic sign reads "Thank you for playing." But eagle-eyed fans noticed something intriguing: when the sign is turned sideways, the wooden boards form the Roman numeral "IX," signifying the number 9.

While some might dismiss this as a mere coincidence, horror game insider Dusk Golem points out that the lower plank, crucial to forming the "IX," was absent in earlier parts of the video, suggesting it was deliberately added. One fan responded with surprise, saying, "I know what you did here," followed by a wide-eyed emoji.

Capcom has also confirmed that the next mainline entry in the Resident Evil series, presumably Resident Evil 9, will be helmed by Koshi Nakanishi, the director of Resident Evil 7. Nakanishi has expressed the challenge of following up Resident Evil 7 but hinted at a significant new direction. "It was really difficult to figure out what to do after [Resident Evil 7]," Nakanishi said at the time. "But I found it, and to be honest, it feels substantial. I can't share any details just yet, but I hope you're excited for the day I can." There's speculation, though not confirmed, that the game might be set on an island inspired by Singapore.
