Earthblade Cancellation: A Heartbreaking Update from Extremely OK Games

Extremely OK Games (EXOK), the creators of the acclaimed indie title Celeste, have announced the cancellation of their highly anticipated project, Earthblade. This decision, detailed in a recent update on their website, stems from internal team challenges.

EXOK Director Maddy Thorson explained that a significant contributing factor was a "fracture" within the team, involving disagreements regarding the intellectual property rights of Celeste. While a resolution was reached, it resulted in the departure of former Art Director Pedro Medeiros, who is now pursuing his own project, Neverway. Thorson emphasized that there are no hard feelings, stating that Medeiros and his team are not considered adversaries.

However, Medeiros' departure wasn't the sole reason for Earthblade's cancellation. Thorson cited the game's protracted development and the pressure to surpass the success of Celeste as contributing factors to team burnout and a sense of lost direction. The project, described as an "explor-action platformer," was significantly further behind schedule than anticipated.

Looking Ahead: A Return to Roots

With a smaller team, EXOK is now refocusing on smaller-scale projects, prioritizing a more sustainable and enjoyable development process. They aim to recapture the creative spirit that fueled Celeste and TowerFall. Thorson expressed hope for future collaborations with former team members.

Earthblade, which would have followed the journey of Névoa, a child of Fate, across a ruined Earth, will not see the light of day. While disappointing for fans, the decision reflects a commitment to the well-being of the team and a renewed focus on a healthier creative approach.
