"Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell" Revives Matt Murdock in Dark Knight Style
It's an exhilarating time for Daredevil fans. The beloved live-action Netflix series is set to continue with "Daredevil: Born Again" on Disney+, while the comic book realm is buzzing with the launch of a new miniseries titled "Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell." This series brings together the talents of Charles Soule, known for his work on "Death of Wolverine," and artist Steve McNiven, promising a storyline that echoes the iconic "The Dark Knight Returns." Imagine a world where Daredevil, much like Batman in Frank Miller's classic, makes a dramatic return to action.
IGN had the opportunity to delve into this exciting project with Soule via email. Before we dive into the details, take a moment to explore an exclusive preview of "Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1" in the slideshow gallery below.

The parallels to "The Dark Knight Returns" are evident, yet "Cold Day in Hell" carves its own path. Set in a future where Matt Murdock has lost his powers and is contending with the challenges of aging and a past filled with tragedy, the series explores a time when superheroes have largely vanished from the Marvel Universe. Soule explains that Matt's retirement from the Daredevil persona is rooted in the natural fading of his radioactive-derived powers. "Matt's older, for sure," Soule shared with IGN. "We don't get specific with it, but the idea is that he left super hero life behind many years ago. Not just him, either - in the world of Cold Day In Hell, super heroes are long gone, at least in comparison to the way they operate in the present-day Marvel Universe."
This narrative trope of an aging superhero returning to action is not new, yet it remains compelling. Soule highlights the power of showing familiar characters in new life stages, allowing readers to see them in fresh, yet defining ways. "For me, the tonal switcheroo you get when you show familiar characters at unfamiliar points in their lives can be a really potent way to define them in new ways for readers," Soule remarks. This approach not only strips the hero down to their core but also opens the door to innovative storytelling within the Marvel Universe.
Soule and McNiven's collaboration extends beyond this project, having previously worked together on "Death of Wolverine." While "Cold Day in Hell" exists in a different corner of the Marvel Universe, Soule views their joint efforts as interconnected. "I think everything we do together is in some ways a companion piece to everything we've done," Soule says, emphasizing the evolution of their creative partnership and the experimental nature of this new book.
One of the most intriguing aspects of "Cold Day in Hell" is how it reimagines Daredevil's supporting cast and villains in their later years. While Soule keeps the details under wraps, he promises significant surprises that will captivate fans.
With the release of "Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1" coinciding with the debut of "Born Again," Marvel aims to leverage the excitement around the show. Soule assures that the comic series is accessible to newcomers, requiring only a basic understanding of Daredevil's backstory. "It's designed as a story people can pick up and enjoy if they know the most basic things about Daredevil and his past," Soule explains.
Speaking of "Born Again," Soule's influence from his 2015-2018 run on the Daredevil comics is evident in the series. Key elements like Wilson Fisk's mayoral campaign and the villain Muse are drawn directly from Soule's work. Having viewed the entire season, Soule expressed his excitement about seeing his ideas come to life on screen. "The thought that these ideas will be reaching that many people, when I can still remember writing them down in my red Daredevil notebook almost a decade ago now as things that might be cool... what a wonderful thing," Soule reflects.
"Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1" is slated for release on April 2, 2025. For more insights into Marvel's upcoming releases, explore what to expect from Marvel in 2025 and discover our most anticipated comics of 2025.
