Kojima confirms Death Stranding anime

Death Stranding appears to be expanding beyond just a live-action adaptation - an anime version seems imminent. Ahead of June's Death Stranding 2: On the Beach release, director Hideo Kojima has strongly hinted at an upcoming anime adaptation of his acclaimed game.

In an interview with Vogue Japan (via VGC), Kojima discussed his existing collaboration with A24 on the live-action Death Stranding film before teasing additional anime plans:

"I'm currently collaborating with A24 on a live-action film adaptation of 'DEATH STRANDING.' While game adaptations like 'The Last of Us' faithfully follow the source material and others like 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' cater to fans, each approach has merit. As a cinephile, I'm pursuing cinematic excellence - aiming to craft a 'DEATH STRANDING' that could compete at Cannes or Venice. We're also developing an anime adaptation concurrently."

Though no animation studio has been confirmed, this confirmation suggests Death Stranding will soon bridge into anime media.

In 2023, production company A24 officially announced its partnership with Kojima Productions for the live-action film. Kojima emphasized they weren't creating a direct game translation, stating: "Our film will appeal to both fans and general cinema lovers. We're building an entirely new Death Stranding universe that can only exist through film."

Earlier this year, reports indicated Michael Sarnoski (A Quiet Place: Day One) joined as writer and director. Game protagonist Norman Reedus expressed willingness to reprise his role "if the opportunity arose."

The prospect of an anime adaptation opens fascinating creative possibilities. Different animation studios could interpret Death Stranding's distinctive universe in unique ways - imagine Studio Trigger's vibrant style applied to Kojima's surreal vision.
