"Dragon Age: The Veilguard Director Leaves BioWare"
Corinne Busche, the game director behind Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is set to depart from EA-owned BioWare in the coming weeks, as reported by Eurogamer. Busche, who took the helm of the project in February 2022 and guided it through to its launch in October last year, joined BioWare in 2019 after working at Maxis on various The Sims projects. IGN has reached out to EA for further comment on this development.
Since its release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has faced scrutiny over its success. Despite this, Eurogamer noted that Busche's departure will not impact the studio's operations. Her leadership was crucial in navigating the game through a tumultuous decade of development, which saw a significant shift from a multiplayer concept to a full-fledged single-player RPG. EA has not yet disclosed whether the game's sales met their expectations, with the company set to announce its Q3 2025 financial results on February 4.
In other news, BioWare has confirmed that there will be no DLC for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, as the studio shifts its focus to Mass Effect 5. The development of Mass Effect 5 has been hinted at over the years, but a full reveal is still pending.
The studio faced significant changes in August 2023, when it laid off around 50 employees, including veteran narrative designer Mary Kirby. These layoffs were part of a broader restructuring at EA, which separated its operations into sports and non-sports divisions. Amidst rumors of a potential acquisition, Star Wars: The Old Republic was transitioned to a third-party, allowing BioWare to concentrate on its flagship series, Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
The journey of Dragon Age: The Veilguard was marked by challenges, including negative reactions to its initial reveal trailer in 2024, which prompted an early gameplay tease to reassure fans. The name change from Dreadwolf to The Veilguard also met with mixed responses. Despite these hurdles, subsequent impressions of the game were generally positive.
With Busche's departure and the studio's focus shifting to Mass Effect 5, fans of Dragon Age are left pondering whether BioWare will have the opportunity to continue the series with a sequel to The Veilguard.
