The key is to collect everything you encounter: flowers, plants, animal wool, feathers, etc. Don't overlook anything, as even seemingly insignificant items might be crucial later. (I once needed 100 daisies and spent ages collecting them!)

Animal Grooming:

Approach animals and use the grooming suit (accessed by pressing Tab and selecting the brush icon).

To collect wool or feathers, sneak up on the animal (hold right-click until a blue brush icon appears above it) before releasing the right mouse button. Some animals might flee if you don't sneak up.
