Rather than idly waiting for Elden Ring: Nightreign, a dedicated fan has transformed the anticipation into a gaming marathon. Known as chickensandwich420 on YouTube, this player has vowed to defeat Messmer, a notoriously challenging boss from Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, daily. The twist? Each battle will be fought on NG+7 using a new weapon every time, and without taking a single hit.
Since starting this challenge on December 16, 2024, chickensandwich420 has documented his progress on his channel. Initially, he considered tackling various bosses from FromSoftware games but opted for Messmer due to his academic commitments as a senior at university. He expressed a desire to avoid "spending time grinding bosses instead of doing work."
Messmer the Impaler, the second antagonist in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, is renowned for his difficulty. Players have reported needing anywhere from 30 to over 150 attempts to defeat him, even when fully equipped with the best gear. This makes chickensandwich420's daily challenge a truly monumental task.
There's a catch, however: chickensandwich420 has set a personal deadline of June for Nightreign's release. If the game doesn't launch by then, he plans to shift his focus to other titles. This would mean over 160 days of battling Messmer. As of the latest update, he's on day 23.
Elden Ring: Nightreign, announced at The Game Awards 2024, is slated for a 2025 release. As a spin-off set in the same universe, it promises a standalone three-player co-op adventure. Given FromSoftware's history of delayed releases, it remains uncertain whether Nightreign will meet chickensandwich420's deadline, potentially bringing an end to his remarkable Messmer challenge.
