"Elden Ring Nightreign Director Admits Duos Were Neglected, Focus Was on Trios"
Elden Ring Nightreign is set to immerse players in the ever-changing landscapes of Limveld, where they can battle for survival either alone or in groups of three. However, for those who prefer playing in duos, it seems you'll need to be open to welcoming a third player into your party.
In an interview with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign's director, Junya Ishizaki, shed light on the game's focus on solo and trio experiences. When questioned about the absence of a dedicated two-player mode without a matchmade third, Ishizaki admitted it was an oversight during development. "The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we're very sorry about that," he explained. He emphasized that the game was designed and balanced for three-player co-op, which was the main focus and core of Nightreign.
Ishizaki also highlighted the game's consideration for solo players, stating, "Of course, I myself as a player understand that and often want times where I'm just playing myself, so this is something that we considered from the start." He noted that the development team put significant effort into ensuring the game was enjoyable for solo players within the bounds of the game's rules and systems. However, in focusing on these aspects, the needs of duos were somewhat neglected. Ishizaki assured that this is an area they are looking to address in post-launch support.
If you're a duo player, be prepared to accept a random third player into your adventures. It might just turn out to be a beneficial addition, especially if you match up with someone skilled at the game.
For solo players, Elden Ring Nightreign dynamically adjusts its parameters based on the number of players in a session, ensuring that lone wolves won't feel overwhelmed. Solo players will also need to seek out self-revive options, which are specifically designed for single-player experiences. Meanwhile, those playing in trios will find the game optimized for their group size, ready to tackle the formidable bosses lurking in Nightreign.
Elden Ring Nightreign is scheduled for release on May 30, 2025, and will be available on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X and S.
