"Evil Dead: Game Removed from Stores 3 Years Post-Launch, Servers Stay Online"
The beloved asymmetric multiplayer game, Evil Dead: The Game, has been pulled from digital storefronts by its publisher, marking the end of its availability for purchase. Launched in 2022 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the game drew praise for its thrilling gameplay, receiving an 8/10 in IGN's review, which noted: "Evil Dead: The Game is an asymmetric multiplayer game of cat and mouse that’s compelling and exhilarating, despite being rough around the edges - much like the horror/comedies that inspired it."
Despite the release of a Game of the Year Edition a year later, the title struggled to maintain its player base. The cancellation of the Nintendo Switch version in September 2023 and the halt of content development were clear indicators of waning support. Now, three years post-launch, Evil Dead: The Game is no longer available to buy, though its servers will continue to operate, allowing existing players to enjoy the game.
Saber Interactive, the game's developer and publisher, confirmed the move on the game's Steam page, stating:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The decision has not been well-received by all, with numerous negative reviews on the game's Steam page expressing disappointment and frustration over the game's effective demise. Despite this, Evil Dead: The Game maintains a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam. One positive review from a dedicated player with over 380 hours in-game poignantly stated, "The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."
Saber Interactive, fresh off the success of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, is not slowing down. The studio is actively developing several licensed movie games, including John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, and an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game. Additionally, Turok: Origins and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 are also in the pipeline, promising more exciting titles for gamers to look forward to.
