Final Fantasy IX Marks Quarter-Century Milestone
Dedicated Anniversary Site Goes Live
Square Enix has debuted a special website honoring Final Fantasy IX's 25th anniversary. The portal confirms "various commemorative projects including merchandise and collaborations" are currently in development.
The anniversary collection features FFIX-themed products like character figurines, plush toys, vinyl records, soundtrack CDs, and illustrated storybooks. The company promises additional announcements leading up to the official anniversary date.
Originally launched for PlayStation on July 7, 2000, Final Fantasy IX has sold over 8.9 million copies globally. The game received multiple re-releases including a 2012 anniversary edition bundle, mobile remasters in 2016, and modern console ports between 2017-2019.
Potential Remake and Delayed Anime Project
The anniversary site's launch has reignited speculation about a potential FFIX remake. Following the acclaimed Final Fantasy VII remake series and FFIX's fourth-place ranking in NHK's 2019 franchise poll, fans see strong potential for similar treatment.
Separately, questions remain about the status of "Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy" animated series. Announced in 2021 as continuing Vivi's story through his descendants, the project faced setbacks when production partner Cyber Group Studios filed bankruptcy in late 2024. Multiple studios have expressed interest in acquiring and continuing the animated adaptation.
