Art of Rally Meets F1 in Formula Legends
Italian developer 3DClouds has unveiled Formula Legends, an arcade-style open-wheel racer inspired by Art of Rally that pays unlicensed homage to more than 50 years of Formula 1 history.
In an exclusive early look provided to IGN, while aspects like AI behavior are still being refined, the dedication to authentically capturing various F1 eras is already striking.
Formula Legends will include 16 distinct car models, each featuring seven unique liveries. These chunky, toy-like caricatures of real machines are clad in off-brand tributes to some of motorsport's most iconic designs, making their inspirations unmistakable. The development team has prioritized authentic sound design, a crucial element for capturing the essence of classic F1 cars. The game will also support modding for liveries, helmets, and trackside sponsors, which could significantly expand its longevity.
Each of the 14 circuits will offer multiple layout variations reflecting their evolution from the 1970s to the 2020s, with all tracks drawing inspiration from real-world locations.
The story mode, featuring era-based championships, promises to guide players through the defining moments of F1's storied past.
The racing itself aims for depth. Beyond the 200 drivers—including cheekily named personalities like Mike Shoemaker and current leader Osvald Pastry—each with unique skill perks, players will manage tire wear, fuel consumption, evolving racing lines, damage, and dynamic weather. Striking the right balance between these simulation elements and an accessible arcade feel will be a key challenge for the developers.

Producer Francesco Mantovani noted the team drew inspiration from 2023's New Star GP—itself an F1-themed nod to early 3D racers—but sought a experience less purely arcade-focused for Formula Legends.
"We aimed to position it between New Star GP and Art of Rally in terms of gameplay," Mantovani said. "Art of Rally was our primary inspiration, particularly in how they approached camera work and track design."
While 3DClouds has a history of licensed titles for younger audiences, such as Paw Patrol Grand Prix and Hot Wheels Monster Trucks, Formula Legends is described as a true passion project developed independently.
"This is a game they've wanted to create for a very long time, and we finally have the resources to make it happen," explained executive producer Roberta Migliori. The studio's contract work has positioned it well as F1's popularity grows. "With the sport's rising profile and our team's strong passion, the timing felt perfect. The project is entirely self-funded through our previous game work."
3DClouds' location in Milan, just a short drive from the legendary Monza circuit, likely provides additional inspiration.
Formula Legends is scheduled for release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch later this year. The team does not currently have Switch 2 development kits but will "explore that opportunity as soon as we are ready," Migliori confirmed.
