Genki, known for its innovative handheld gaming gadgets like the PocketPro game controller, brought a 3D-printed mockup of the Nintendo Switch 2 to the event. The model, based on a unit reportedly purchased on the black market, allowed attendees to get a hands-on look at what the future of Nintendo's console might hold.

The mockup showcased several notable features, including an increased size that rivals Valve’s Steam Deck, magnetic Joy-Con attachments, a second USB-C port, and a new button labeled "C." In an exclusive interview with The Verge, Genki CEO Eddie Tsai provided further insight into these elements. He confirmed that the Joy-Con on the Switch 2 use magnets, particularly the SL and SR buttons, which can be detached using a large button that releases a pin to break the magnetic hold. Despite the shift from the current-gen Switch's sliding rails to magnets, Tsai assured that the Joy-Con remain secure during gameplay.

Genki Shares Additional Details About the Switch 2

Tsai also revealed that each Joy-Con's "mounting channel" includes an optical sensor, hinting at new functionalities. This sensor could potentially allow the Joy-Con to function as a mouse when paired with a new attachment connected via the magnetic SL and SR buttons. Recent leaks of Switch 2 images have seemingly corroborated this feature, as many have noted the presence of optical sensors on the new Joy-Con.

Despite its larger dimensions, the Switch 2 remains slim enough to fit into the current Nintendo Switch dock. However, specific indentations on the new console mean it won't be compatible with the original dock. As for the mysterious "C" button and the additional USB-C port, Genki has yet to uncover their purposes.
