GeoGuessr Responds to Feedback Amid Steam Rating Plunge

GeoGuessr Steam Edition, a reimagined version of the globally popular browser game, launched on May 8 and has already become the second-worst rated game of all time on Steam.
The original browser-based GeoGuessr is a massive hit, with over 85 million players worldwide. It offers extensive customization options that allow users to personalize their gameplay experience—choosing who they play against, selecting map types, toggling between urban or rural settings, restricting spawns to specific regions, enabling or disabling movement and zooming (including NMPZ modes), and exploring thousands of user-created custom maps.
However, since its release last Wednesday, the Steam edition has received over 3,000 reviews—with 84% being negative. Players are primarily criticizing the free-to-play model for its aggressive monetization and the severe lack of features compared to the browser version.

But that’s not all. Once you link your browser GeoGuessr account to the Steam version, there's no way to unlink it, and logging out of the Steam edition isn't possible. Solo practice sessions aren’t available, and the free amateur mode appears to be populated mostly by bots rather than real players. Perhaps most frustratingly, even if you pay for premium access in the browser version, those benefits do not transfer to the Steam edition.
To its credit, GeoGuessr clearly outlines this in its FAQs, stating that owning a browser subscription doesn’t grant full access to the Steam Edition unless you have an Elite Yearly subscription. Unlike the browser version, which requires recurring payments, the Steam Edition offers a "one-time purchase" Steam Pass that grants full access for one year. The game is also labeled as an early access title, allowing developers to refine the experience, introduce new features, and gather direct feedback from players.
Despite these clarifications, many players feel misled—especially regarding the monetization structure and limited content availability.
While technically free-to-play, GeoGuessr Steam provides what feels like less than an hour of free gameplay (based on our own experience). At launch, it includes only one core mode—Duels—and allows players to compete solely in the Amateur Division. To unlock higher ranks and more content, players must purchase the $2.50 monthly subscription, which actually costs $30 upfront annually. No other modes are available at this time.

It's worth noting that the browser version isn’t fully free either. While casual players can enjoy up to three rounds per day at no cost, unlocking all modes and features requires a subscription. There are three tiers available: Pro Basic ($2.49/month), Pro Unlimited ($2.99/month), and Pro Elite ($4.99/month). Only the latter two subscriptions include access to the Steam Edition.
In an exclusive statement to IGN, GeoGuessr expressed enthusiasm about bringing the game to Steam, calling it “a highly requested feature by our community.” The company stated that the move aligns with its mission of making global exploration accessible across platforms. Benefits include easier friend connectivity through Steam and improved anti-cheat measures, both of which are critical for maintaining fair gameplay.
Cheating has long been a persistent issue in the browser version, with some players resorting to external tools like Google Maps to gain unfair advantages. By moving to Steam, GeoGuessr hopes to leverage the platform’s infrastructure to help reduce such exploits.
“This is a major milestone for us—and just the beginning,” said Tomas Jonson, head of marketing. “We’re committed to improving both free and paid experiences during Early Access. A lot of player feedback so far has focused on the monetization model, with many preferring a one-time payment.”
The developer explained that due to ongoing licensing costs tied to Google Street View data, the monetization strategy mirrors that of the browser version. However, there is one key difference: the Steam Pass is a non-recurring annual purchase.
According to GeoGuessr, the Steam Edition will remain in Early Access for at least six months, during which time the team plans to roll out updates featuring new modes, maps, and competitive elements. The official Steam page emphasizes the goal of expanding gameplay variety and enhancing the overall player experience.
“We truly appreciate the high level of engagement and the valuable feedback we’ve received so far,” Jonson concluded. “We’ll continue listening to the community and working closely with them as we develop the Steam Edition further.”
