"Jack Wall on Missing Mass Effect 3: 'It's Just Part of the Deal'"
Composer Jack Wall, known for crafting the beloved soundtracks for the first two Mass Effect games, recently opened up about his absence from the third installment, Mass Effect 3. Wall's contributions to the series, especially the iconic 'Suicide Mission' from Mass Effect 2, have been celebrated by fans as some of the finest moments in video game music. Released in 2007 and 2010, respectively, Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 embraced an 80s sci-fi music style, which played a significant role in the games' critical and commercial success.
In a candid interview with The Guardian, Wall revealed that his departure stemmed from a falling out with Casey Hudson, who was the head of Mass Effect's development at the time. "Casey was not particularly happy with me at the end," Wall admitted. Despite the tension, Wall expressed pride in his work, noting that the Mass Effect 2 soundtrack received a BAFTA nomination and performed well overall, though it did not meet Hudson's expectations entirely.
Wall hinted at a "creative tension" between himself and Hudson but remained somewhat vague about the specifics. "Fallouts like that happen, it's just part of the deal," he remarked, emphasizing that such occurrences are rare in his career but inevitable in the industry. He also shed light on the immense challenges faced during the development of Mass Effect 2, particularly with the 'Suicide Mission' track. "It was the biggest mind-f\*\*\*ing thing I've ever done in my entire life," Wall confessed, highlighting the intense pressure and the collaborative effort required to integrate the music into the game successfully.
Following his work on the Mass Effect series, Wall transitioned to composing for the Call of Duty franchise, with his most recent project being the soundtrack for Black Ops 6. Meanwhile, BioWare is gearing up for the next Mass Effect game, following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, though the composer for the upcoming title has yet to be announced.
