Mark Hamill Explains Luke Skywalker's Dark Exile
Mark Hamill has elaborated on the personal backstory he created for Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, following his efforts to clarify his issues with Rian Johnson's narrative direction.
Hamill has been open about his disagreement with Luke's on-screen motivations for exiling himself and becoming the recluse Rey encounters in 2017's The Last Jedi. As depicted in the film, Luke holds himself responsible for Ben Solo's turn to the Dark Side, leading him to renounce the Jedi path. When Rey locates him to enlist his aid for the Resistance, he refuses.
Now, eight years after the film's release, Hamill has detailed his own imagined rationale for Luke's abandonment of the Jedi way.
During an interview on Bullseye with Jesse Thorn to promote his new film, The Life of Chuck, Hamill was questioned about his initial discomfort upon learning of Luke's self-imposed exile in The Last Jedi.
He began his response by affirming his admiration for Rian Johnson, stating he believes the director made "a great movie."
"Let me be clear: Rian Johnson is one of the most talented directors I've ever collaborated with," Hamill stated. "He's personable, enjoyable on set, and brilliant. He created a fantastic film. The final confrontation between Kylo Ren, Adam Driver, and myself is masterfully staged. The foreshadowing that I'm not physically present is clever—Adam brushes away snow to reveal the red ground beneath, while when I do it, it's just snow. It's a subtle touch. I'm a fan of Knives Out, Brick, and Looper. He ranks among my favorite directors.
"My public expression of dissatisfaction with Luke's motivation for becoming a reclusive, broken man may have skewed perceptions, and perhaps I should have kept those thoughts private. But I repeatedly told Rian, 'This would only make Luke more resolute...' to which he replied, 'Your entire Jedi Academy class was annihilated.'"
This refers to the scene where a young Ben Solo causes a structure to collapse on Luke, destroys the Jedi temple, and slaughters his students before fleeing to eventually become Kylo Ren.
"I countered, 'Rian, I witnessed entire planets destroyed! If anything, Luke would become more determined and resilient in adversity.' So that was my point," Hamill explained.
"I asked, 'Can I create my own backstory to explain his state? I don't want to simply say he suffered a head injury and brain damage.' He agreed, 'Sure, do whatever you need.' So I devised a much darker backstory that I felt could rationally explain his behavior."

Hamill then shared this backstory, which takes a decidedly grim turn:
"I pondered, what could drive someone to abandon a lifelong devotion to what is essentially a religious calling, to give up being a Jedi?" Hamill began. "The love of a woman. So he falls in love, renounces his Jedi status, they have a child. At some point, the toddler finds an unattended lightsaber, activates it, and is instantly killed. Overwhelmed by grief, his wife takes her own life."
This personal canon, Hamill argued, would have validated Luke's actions and provided sufficient motivation for his seclusion.
"I thought that would be profoundly tragic—I hear these awful stories about children finding unsecured guns with fatal consequences," he continued. "That resonated with me deeply, and it felt like a plausible trigger. But I assume he didn't have time for such an elaborate backstory. He needed a concise explanation. To me, what was presented didn't fully justify it.
"That said—and I told him this—even though I disagreed with his character choices for Luke, I committed to doing everything in my power to realize his vision for the screenplay. The only unfortunate outcome is that some fans misinterpreted my creative disagreement as a personal dislike for Rian Johnson, which is absolutely not the case."
These remarks follow closely on Hamill's confirmation that he will not reprise his role in a future Star Wars film, asserting: "There's no way I'm appearing as a naked Force ghost."
Rey is slated to return to the Star Wars universe in a sequel directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, following the poorly received Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker. The story will follow Rey as she endeavors to rebuild the Jedi Order approximately 15 years after the events of that film.
In the nearer future, The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled for a 2026 release. Star Wars: Starfighter, Shawn Levy's Star Wars film starring Ryan Gosling, is expected in 2027.
