Only high-ranking and prominent enemy officers can be challenged to a duel, signaled by their initial appearance on the battlefield. To initiate a duel, you must quickly press both the R1 and L1 buttons simultaneously, seizing the moment before it passes.

Once a duel begins, an arena forms around you, isolating you and your opponent for a fierce showdown. Unlike regular combat, duels feature a unique mechanic: a meter at the top of the screen displays both your and your opponent's status. Each successful hit you land advances your section of the meter, while your opponent's hits do the same for them. The objective is to fill the meter completely by inflicting enough damage on your foe. Importantly, your starting position on the meter is influenced by your overall morale rather than your health. If you're winning, your bar will be more filled; if losing, your opponent's will dominate. In an even battle, both sections will be equal. To triumph, you must carefully observe your opponent's moves, dodge, parry, and maintain a strategic distance, especially if they use Battle Arts. Time is of the essence, but recklessness can lead to defeat.

Victory in a duel grants you the power to deal significant damage to your opponent and boosts your morale tremendously, potentially turning the tide of the battle. Conversely, losing a duel results in heavy damage to yourself and a severe morale drop for your army, which could be catastrophic in the late stages of a conflict. If neither side wins decisively, the duel ends without penalty, and both combatants resume the fight as normal. However, some duels are inescapable; losing these results in mission failure, while winning them ensures victory in the battle. Thus, initiating a duel can be a game-changer, but underestimating your opponent could lead to your downfall.
