Minecraft Creator Hints at a Spiritual Successor: Minecraft 2 on the Horizon?

Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has sparked excitement among fans by suggesting a potential "Minecraft 2" is in the works. A recent poll on X (formerly Twitter) revealed his intentions.

On January 1st, Notch posted a poll asking fans whether he should prioritize a new roguelike/dungeon crawler or a spiritual successor to his iconic creation. The latter option overwhelmingly won, securing 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes. This significant response reflects the enduring popularity of Minecraft, which boasts millions of daily players globally.

In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed the poll's seriousness, essentially declaring a "Minecraft 2" announcement. He expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting his passion project, stating his willingness to undertake a spiritual successor. He clarified that the order of development isn't firmly set, but he's committed to creating one of the two games.

It's important to note that Notch sold Mojang (Minecraft's developer) and the Minecraft IP to Microsoft in 2014. Therefore, he can't directly utilize the Minecraft IP without Microsoft's involvement. However, he assures fans that any new project will avoid infringing on Mojang's and Microsoft's current work, expressing respect for their ongoing efforts.

Notch acknowledges the inherent risks of creating a spiritual successor, admitting that such projects don't always meet expectations. Despite this, he's motivated by the strong fan demand and the potential financial success.

While fans eagerly anticipate this potential "Minecraft 2," they can also look forward to other Minecraft-related ventures. A Minecraft-themed amusement park is slated for the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, and a live-action movie, "A Minecraft Movie," is scheduled for release later in 2025.
