How To Unlock Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley
Starting a new farm in Stardew Valley lets you adopt a cat or dog. While initially limited to one pet per save, the 1.6 update changed that, allowing multiple companions. To add more pets, you'll need to meet a few prerequisites.
First, maximize your friendship with your current pet. Ensure their bowl is full daily (excluding rainy/snowy days). Pet them once a day—a heart bubble confirms your affection. Monitor their friendship level via the "Animals" tab in the pause menu.
A full friendship meter triggers a mail from Marnie, announcing the availability of additional pets. If you skipped the initial pet adoption, Marnie will send this mail at the start of Year 2.
How To Adopt Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley
After receiving Marnie's mail, visit her shop (9 AM - 4 PM, closed Mondays and Tuesdays). Choose "Adopt Pets" from the dialogue options.
You'll see a list of 12 Pet Licenses: five cat variations, five dog variations, and two turtle types. Each license has a cost:

How To Get Supplies for Pets in Stardew Valley
After adopting, visit Robin's shop to commission Pet Bowls (5,000g and 25 Hardwood each). These serve as water sources and "homes," preventing friendship decay and runaway pets.
Marnie also sells optional decorative items like doghouses and cat trees. These don't affect friendship.
