James Gunn's Green Lantern a 'Jerk' in Superman Film

Mar 06,26(2 months ago)

James Gunn's upcoming Superman reboot introduces a fresh take on the hero, along with Nathan Fillion's portrayal of Green Lantern. The actor recently discussed how his version of Guy Gardner will stand apart from previous film and TV renditions—and surprisingly, this iteration won't be the most likable.

"He's a jerk!" Fillion revealed in a recent TV Guide interview. "The key thing to understand is that being a Green Lantern doesn't require goodness; it only demands fearlessness. Guy Gardner is fearless, but he's far from good. He's not a nice person, which is liberating as an actor because you simply ask yourself, what’s the most selfish, self-serving action I can take right now? And that’s your answer. That’s exactly what you do in that moment.”

Fillion even noted that Gardner’s superhero persona struggles with arrogance. “If he has a superpower, it might be his extreme overconfidence—to the point where he believes he could take on Superman,” the actor explained. “But he definitely can't!"

The new Superman film marks the first entry in a completely rebooted DC Cinematic Universe and will launch the DCU's opening chapter, Gods and Monsters. However, the DC studio isn’t the only one exploring Green Lantern stories. HBO is currently filming a series titled Lanterns, which will focus on other members of the superhero corps, starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The show is scheduled to debut in 2026.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Written and directed by James Gunn, the film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
