Netflix's Gears of War Movie Progresses, Marcus Fenix Casting Still Unknown
David Leitch, the acclaimed director behind films like *The Fall Guy*, *Atomic Blonde*, *Deadpool 2*, *Hobbs & Shaw*, and *Bullet Train*, is reportedly in negotiations to helm Netflix's adaptation of the popular video game, *Gears of War*. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch, along with his partner Kelly McCormick, will be producing the film in collaboration with The Coalition, the game's developer. The screenplay is being penned by Jon Spaihts, known for his work on *Dune*.
It's been over two years since Netflix acquired the rights to *Gears of War*, and it appears that the project is finally gaining momentum. In addition to the movie, an adult animation series is also in development, set to release following the film. If the initial adaptations are successful, more *Gears of War* projects could be on the horizon.
A key point of interest for fans is who will portray the iconic character Marcus Fenix. Dave Bautista, a former wrestler turned actor, has publicly expressed his strong desire to take on the role and has even received endorsement from *Gears* co-creator Cliff Bleszinski.
The timing seems perfect, as video game adaptations continue to gain traction, with recent successes like *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, *A Minecraft Movie*, and the *Sonic* series breaking box office records. Other notable adaptations include the *Uncharted* movie, *Mortal Kombat*, and various *Resident Evil* films, indicating a growing trend in the industry.

Microsoft's gaming chief, Phil Spencer, recently emphasized the company's commitment to further video game adaptations despite the underwhelming reception of the *Halo* TV series. Spencer highlighted that Microsoft is learning and gaining confidence from each project, including *Halo* and *Fallout*. He reassured the Xbox community that more adaptations are planned, stating, "We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more."
On the gaming front, The Coalition is currently developing *Gears of War: E-Day*, a prequel to the series, though a release date has yet to be announced.
