Nintendo's Switch 2 Camera: 1080p vs. Hori's 480p Piranha Plant Model

Hori’s Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant camera boasts a modest resolution of just 480p, which pales in comparison to the 1080p video capture quality of Nintendo’s official Switch 2 camera. The UK My Nintendo Store has officially confirmed these specifications, highlighting a notable difference in performance between the two cameras.

Despite its lower resolution, Hori’s Piranha Plant camera, which is officially licensed by Nintendo, comes at a more affordable price point than Nintendo’s own $49.99 camera. Both cameras are set to launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, and users have the flexibility to use the Nintendo Switch 2 camera accessory or any compatible USB-C camera with the new console.
The Piranha Plant camera offers unique functionality, allowing the part housing the webcam to detach from the pot. This feature enables users to place it directly on top of the Switch 2, enhancing its portability compared to Nintendo’s camera. Additionally, users can close the plant’s mouth to obscure the lens when not in use.
The gaming community was taken aback by the news of the Piranha Plant camera's 480p resolution. Reddit user Ramen536Pie questioned, "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025? That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera." LizardsoftheGhost found it amusing, stating, "That’s actually hilarious. Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out." Meanwhile, pokemonfitness1420 pondered, "Isn’t 480p a crime nowadays?"
During last week’s Nintendo Direct, the company introduced the Switch 2’s GameChat functionality, which can be activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature allows players to watch each other playing the same or different games, and with a camera, even see one another. The built-in microphone promises reliable audio regardless of the player's gaming environment. The C button's chat menu is designed to be a comprehensive multiplayer tool, potentially marking Nintendo's most significant online initiative in decades.
