Pokémon TCG Pocket: No Competitive Plans

The Pokémon Company has confirmed it currently has no plans to include Pokémon TCG Pocket in its competitive circuit. This article explores the reasons behind this decision and looks ahead to the game's future.
Pokémon TCG Pocket: No Immediate Competitive Plans

In a recent interview with VGC (February 25, 2025), Chris Brown, Director of eSports at The Pokémon Company, stated that while they continually evaluate potential additions to their competitive scene, Pokémon TCG Pocket isn't currently on the roadmap. He humorously mentioned Pokémon Sleep as another example of a title not currently considered, referencing a past April Fool's joke about a Pokémon Sleep championship. However, he emphasized that their assessment of potential competitive games is ongoing.
Why the Wait? Early Stages and Balancing Concerns

While no official reasons have been given, several factors likely contribute to this decision. Pokémon TCG Pocket, launched only four months prior (October 2024) and with just two sets released, is still in its early stages of development. Although the game includes competitive features, ongoing balancing issues remain a concern for players. Furthermore, Pokémon TCG Pocket is a simplified version of the traditional card game, designed for a broader, more casual audience. A competitive focus isn't a primary design goal at this time.
Despite this, The Pokémon Company's competitive circuit remains robust, featuring Pokémon TCG, Pokémon GO, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and Pokémon Unite at the upcoming Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim, California, August 2025.
Potential New Set Reveal at Pokémon Presents?
The upcoming Pokémon Presents livestream (February 27, 2025, 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET on YouTube and Twitch) could offer insights into Pokémon TCG Pocket's future. The previous set, Space Time Smackdown, launched on January 30, 2025, leaving room for a new set announcement. While the event's agenda remains undisclosed, speculation abounds regarding major franchise announcements. This event could also shed light on the previously announced Pokémon Legends: Z-A, slated for a 2025 release, and the recently revealed Mega Evolutions. Regardless, Pokémon Presents is highly anticipated by fans eager for updates across the entire Pokémon franchise.
