Pokémon TCG Sees Trainer's Pokémon Return in 2025
The Pokémon Company International made a splash at the 2024 Pokémon World Championships, announcing the highly anticipated return of classic Pokémon TCG mechanics in 2025.
Nostalgia Strikes: Trainer's Pokémon and Team Rocket Cards
While no official release date is confirmed, the announcement included a teaser trailer showcasing beloved trainers like Marnie, Lillie, and N, alongside their signature Pokémon. This strongly suggests the comeback of "Trainer's Pokémon" cards – a beloved feature from the TCG's early days. These cards, featuring Pokémon uniquely associated with specific trainers and boasting distinctive artwork and abilities, were a fan favorite. The trailer previewed Lillie’s Clefairy ex, Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex, N’s Zoroark ex, and N’s Reshiram.
Further fueling excitement, the teaser hinted at the return of Team Rocket, showcasing Mewtwo alongside the infamous duo's logo. This has sparked speculation about a dedicated Team Rocket expansion or even the resurgence of Dark Pokémon, another popular early-game mechanic linked to Team Rocket and featuring darker, more powerful versions of familiar Pokémon. Rumors of Team Rocket's return have circulated, fueled by reported Japanese retailer listings and a trademark filing by The Pokémon Company ("The Glory of Team Rocket").
Paradise Dragona Set Debuts
Beyond the nostalgic revivals, the World Championships also unveiled the first glimpses of the upcoming Paradise Dragona set. According to PokeBeach, initial cards revealed include Latias, Latios, Exeggcute, and Alolan Exeggutor ex. This Japanese subset, focused on Dragon-type Pokémon, is slated for an English-language release as part of the Surging Sparks set in November 2024.
The Pokémon TCG continues its exciting run, with the Kitikami chapter culminating in the release of the Shrouded Fable expansion this month, boasting 99 cards (64 main cards and 35 secret rare cards), as detailed on the official Pokémon TCG blog. The upcoming year promises a thrilling blend of classic favorites and fresh additions for Pokémon TCG players.
