Rune Slayer Fishing 101

If you had any doubt that *Rune Slayer* isn’t an MMORPG, here’s your proof: it has fishing. And as we all know, if a game has fishing, it’s officially an MMORPG. Kidding aside, you’re here to learn how fishing works in *Rune Slayer*, and we’re here to help. Yeah, we had trouble with this, too, but we eventually figured it out and are happy to tell you how to catch fish in *Rune Slayer*. Spoiler Alert: It definitely isn’t as intuitive as in *Fisch*.

Before you start reeling in those aquatic treasures, make sure to accept the fishing quest from Simon the Fisherman, the white-haired NPC you'll find at one of the piers where the Baracuda swims. Simon will task you with catching 5 "fish," and in return, he'll reward you with a Tackle Box (we’ll get to why the quotation marks are used later).

Here’s the catch: to start fishing, you’ll need a fishing rod and some bait or tackle, and conveniently, Simon the Fisherman has exactly what you need.

Head over to Simon and purchase a Wood Fishing Rod and some Worms. Most seasoned anglers recommend having at least 5 worms, but we opted for 10 to be on the safe side. Before you ask, you cannot equip the bait. Instead, the Worms simply need to be in your inventory; although they aren't equipped, they're still consumed when you catch a fish. Each fish you catch will automatically remove one Worm from your inventory.

Here's the crucial detail: you won't be able to catch any fish unless you have at least 5 bait items in your inventory. We tried fishing with just one Worm and came up empty-handed. It was only after stocking up to 5 Worms that we started seeing results. We suggest placing the Worms in your hotbar to keep an eye on your supply. Once you've got everything ready, you can proceed to the next step.

To begin your fishing adventure, select your Wood Fishing Rod. Since you can't equip it, simply move it to your hotbar or access it from your inventory, and your character will hold it ready.

Hold down the left mouse button (M1) to cast your line into a body of water—the pier near Simon the Fisherman is a great spot.

Next, keep an eye on your bobber. When you see one or two ripples, click M1 again to reel in your catch. It's that simple.

However, success isn't guaranteed every time. Often, you’ll come up empty-handed, and other times, you might reel in junk. The good news is Simon counts junk as a catch (hence the earlier "fish" in quotation marks).

So, to complete the quest, cast your line, wait for those ripples, and reel in anything until you've hit the mark of 5 "fish". We managed to catch only two actual fish, with the rest being Old Cups.

Once you’ve successfully caught 5 "fish", return to Simon the Fisherman to complete the quest. He'll reward you with a tackle box. Open it up and store your remaining Worms inside to free up your inventory space from fishing tackle.

And that’s all there is to fishing in Rune Slayer. Enjoy your time casting lines! If you need more assistance, be sure to check out our Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Rune Slayer.
