The PS Portal, Sony’s handheld accessory for the PS5, resembles a DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen at its center. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device, streaming games at up to 60fps. The Portal replicates DualSense features like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface in place of the touchpad. While it can stream games remotely, a highly stable, high-speed internet connection is required. Note that the PS Portal is not a standalone device—it requires a PS5 to function.
Update: No PS5 needed for PS Portal gaming anymore. Sony now allows streaming directly from its PlayStation Now cloud service, bypassing the need for a $500 console. Users can connect the Portal to their PS5 or Sony’s cloud servers, accessing over 120 games like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. A PlayStation Plus Premium subscription is required, but at $18 monthly, it’s far more affordable than buying a PS5 and individual games.
Streaming PS5 games over Wi-Fi isn’t exclusive to the PS Portal. The PS Remote Play app on mobile devices, including handhelds like the Steam Deck, offers similar functionality. However, setup is more complex, and you may miss out on some DualSense features.

"The PlayStation Portal exceeded my expectations, despite my initial doubts. It’s a far better experience than using a phone with a clip-on controller and performs impressively well. I love the flexibility to play my PS5 anywhere with decent Wi-Fi, especially when the TV is occupied—ironically, often by the Switch. As a device that fully relies on a PS5, its main limitations are the inability to log into Wi-Fi requiring a browser and the lack of Bluetooth audio support. Without these drawbacks, it’d be a must-have for PS5 owners who love handheld gaming or share a household TV."
