"Science Revives Extinct Dire Wolves"
Bringing a super-sized canine back from extinction after 12,500 years might sound like the plot of a blockbuster movie, complete with special effects and dramatic scenes, but it's become a reality thanks to Colossal Biosciences. This biotech company has successfully revived three dire wolves, which now reside in a secret location in the US. Using DNA from the common gray wolf, gene-editing techniques, and domestic dog surrogates, they brought Romulus, Remus, and their younger sister, Khaleesi into existence. These puppies are exactly what any fan of fantasy would envision: large, white, and undeniably impressive.

Ben Lamm, CEO of Colossal, expressed immense pride in the team's achievement, marking it as a significant milestone in their de-extinction technology. "Our team took DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull and created healthy dire wolf puppies," Lamm stated. He emphasized that this advancement showcases the potential of their technology to have a broader impact on conservation efforts, echoing the sentiment that advanced technology can seem magical.

Colossal Biosciences is no stranger to the headlines, having previously engineered a Colossal Woolly Mouse to mimic the appearance of a mammoth. They utilized computational analysis of numerous mammoth genomes to achieve this. However, the company faces criticism, with detractors arguing that the dire wolves are essentially normal wolves in a costume, lacking the genetic purity to be considered true dire wolves.
The mission of Colossal Biosciences extends beyond creating viral sensations or owning extraordinary pets. They aim to use their research to safeguard current species for future generations. Dr. Christopher Mason, a scientific advisor and board member, highlighted the transformative nature of their work, suggesting that the technologies developed for dire wolf de-extinction could aid in conserving other endangered species. He described this as a significant leap in genetic engineering, beneficial for both science and conservation.
Colossal Biosciences has collaborated with the American Humane Society and the USDA to ensure the well-being of Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi on their expansive 2,000+ acre preserve, where they are cared for by a dedicated team.
