Skull and Bones Adds Land Combat This Fall: Ubisoft Reveals Year 2 Plans
Ubisoft is setting sail towards making Skull and Bones Year 2 the most ambitious chapter yet for the pirate multiplayer game, with major content expansions including new modes, ships, the introduction of a Kraken, and a long-awaited feature: land combat.
During a special Year 2 showcase that aired yesterday, Ubisoft unveiled its roadmap for the next year of updates. The presentation was brimming with exciting content, but it's Season 3: Guts and Glory that has caught the community's attention by promising the introduction of land combat, a feature fans have been clamoring for since the game's launch in February last year.
In Season 3, arriving this fall, Ubisoft will enable players to step off their ships and engage in combat on land, including sword fighting and using firearms against other players. This feature is part of the Rogue Warlord additions, where players will explore sandy beaches and damp caves to rescue skilled crew members known as Officers. A teaser video gave a glimpse of what's to come, though full details will unfold later this year.
While land combat stands out as the headline addition for Skull and Bones Year 2, the showcase revealed a treasure trove of other content to keep players engaged throughout 2025. Season 1: Ascent into Chaos launches today, April 15, introducing an item ascension feature to enhance loot, challenging World Tiers, a new Schooner medium ship, and the team-based Death Tides PvP mode. Season 2: Oaths of War, set to launch in summer 2025, will bring Megaforts and the massive Frigate large ships. Finally, Season 4: Eye of the Beast, arriving this winter, will introduce the fearsome Kraken, the Hunter’s Guild, and the Corvette large ship.
If these updates have piqued your interest, you're in luck. Skull and Bones is hosting a free weekend from April 17 to 21, giving players a chance to experience pirate PvP firsthand and purchase the game at a discounted price, details of which are yet to be announced.
Skull and Bones was released on February 16, 2024, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S, earning a 7/10 in our review. Although Ubisoft hasn't released official sales figures, they did mention achieving "record player engagement" shortly after launch. Notably, the release of Skull and Bones also saw a 200% surge in players for Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag.
