Marvel's Spider-Man x Magic: The Gathering - Exclusive Card and Packaging Preview

Launching September 26, Marvel’s Spider-Man will be the second fully draftable, Standard-legal set in Magic’s Universes Beyond line, following Final Fantasy, and the third overall after 2023’s Modern-legal Lord of the Rings set. It won’t include preconstructed Commander decks, but the cards in the Scene Box shown above are not Standard-legal, designed instead for Commander play.

While last year’s Secret Lair featuring Wolverine, Captain America, and others marked Magic’s first step into the Marvel universe, Spider-Man is the first full set inspired by the comics. Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer Max McCall explains that a smaller product wouldn’t have captured the full scope of Spider-Man’s characters and moments.

“Spider-Man deserves a full set to honor the character and his many villains over the years,” McCall says. “Including Spider-Man characters in a broader set would omit too many key figures. We might have fit Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales elsewhere, but Aunt May wouldn’t have made the cut.”

McCall notes that designing a Universes Beyond set “turns worldbuilding upside down.” Unlike typical Magic sets, which establish a new setting while ensuring fun gameplay, Spider-Man’s familiarity allows for richer mechanics. “When we craft a card about great power and great responsibility, we can add complexity because players already know the story. Universes Beyond cards don’t need to be ‘simple’—they just need recognizable moments that fans will grasp.”

Head Designer Mark Rosewater explains how Spider-Man’s world fits into Magic’s color pie, which supports heroism and villainy across all five colors. For example, Spider-Man aligns with white, blue, and green (though the Scene Box version uses only the first two).

“Spider-Man’s duty to use his powers for good ties him to white,” Rosewater says. “His origin from a radioactive spider bite and his knack for invention, like web-slingers, make him blue. His animal-based powers and destined connection to the Spider-Man universe root him in green.”

Beyond the Scene Box, the set includes Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs, all detailed in the gallery above. While there are no preconstructed Commander decks, Welcome Decks return—free, themed introductory decks offered by game stores to help new players learn the game.

In addition to this year’s Final Fantasy set, Wizards of the Coast recently announced a set inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender. Two more in-universe sets, Tarkir: Dragontsorm and the space-themed Edge of Eternities, are also on the horizon.
