1047 Games, the creators of the popular arena shooter Splitgate, has unveiled its highly anticipated sequel: Splitgate 2. Launching in 2025, this free-to-play title promises a fresh take on the original's fast-paced, portal-powered gameplay.

A New Era of Portal Combat

Revealed via a cinematic trailer on July 18th, Splitgate 2 aims to redefine the franchise. CEO Ian Proulx stated their ambition to create a game with enduring appeal, "built to last a decade or more." This vision led to a complete reimagining of the core mechanics, focusing on creating a deeper, more rewarding gameplay loop. Marketing Head Hilary Goldstein emphasized the refined portal system, designed to challenge seasoned players while remaining accessible to newcomers.

Built using Unreal Engine 5, Splitgate 2 will retain familiar elements while offering a significantly enhanced visual and gameplay experience. Key additions include a faction system, adding strategic depth without transforming the game into a hero shooter. Cross-platform play is confirmed for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

The original Splitgate, often described as a fusion of Halo and Portal, quickly gained traction after its 2019 demo release, boasting 600,000 downloads in a single month. Its immense popularity led to server upgrades to handle the influx of players. After a successful early access period, the original game officially launched in September 2022, with 1047 Games subsequently announcing a pause on updates to focus on this ambitious sequel.

Three Factions, Endless Possibilities

Splitgate 2 introduces the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions: Aeros (emphasizing speed), Meridian (focused on tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (highlighting raw power). Each faction offers a unique playstyle, adding layers of strategic depth.

While detailed gameplay remains under wraps until Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), the developers assure fans the trailer accurately reflects the game's quality. The return of dual-wielding is a notable highlight.
