Returning to the Story of Kylo Ren

Charles Soule, who played a significant role in Marvel's exploration of the post-"Empire Strikes Back" era, is now turning his attention to Kylo Ren. Having previously chronicled Ben Solo's transformation in "The Rise of Kylo Ren" miniseries in 2020, Soule is eager to revisit this character. "I’ve wanted to get back to Kylo Ren for ages," Soule shared with IGN. "The films give us only a glimpse of his journey, leaving much of his story implied or unexplored."

"Legacy of Vader" is set immediately after "The Last Jedi," a period of intense change for Kylo Ren. Soule sees this as an opportunity to explore a character at the height of emotional turmoil. "Kylo's life has changed drastically in a short time, making him an emotionally charged character," he explained.

The collaboration with artist Luke Ross, with whom Soule has worked on several Star Wars projects, adds to the excitement. "Luke's work has evolved with each project, and his portrayal of Kylo Ren's rage and turmoil is stunning," Soule praised.

Ben Solo After The Last Jedi

Set in the immediate aftermath of "The Last Jedi," "Legacy of Vader" captures Ben Solo at a critical juncture. After failing to turn Rey to the Dark Side and confronting his uncle Luke Skywalker, Ben is grappling with the weight of his actions, including the near-fatal attack on his mother and the murder of his father. Now in command of the galaxy's most formidable military force, Ben's journey is one of profound internal conflict.

"Ben is struggling to reconcile his identity as Kylo Ren with the remnants of Ben Solo within him," Soule noted. The series begins with Ben visiting Darth Vader's fortress on Mustafar, seeking to sever ties with his past while also seeking guidance from his grandfather's legacy.

Soule also emphasizes the political intrigue within the First Order, a key element of the series. "The internal politics of the First Order, including the machinations of General Hux and Allegiant General Pryde, will be a major focus," he said. This adds another layer to Kylo Ren's struggle as he attempts to consolidate his power.

"Legacy of Vader" aims to deepen our understanding of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo, offering new insights into his motivations and the choices he makes leading up to "The Rise of Skywalker." Soule, with a decade of experience telling Star Wars stories, ensures that the series stands on its own while enriching the broader Star Wars canon.

"This book explores Kylo Ren's struggle to define himself amidst constant turmoil and pain," Soule concluded. "It's a story of self-discovery, but with the added twist of being a dark space wizard wielding a laser sword. Fans can expect a mix of angst, drama, and action."

"Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1" is set to be released on February 5, 2025.
