SNK's surprise announcement at EVO 2024 sent shockwaves through the fighting game community: SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos is back! Now available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4, this classic crossover fighter receives a much-needed update. (Xbox users, unfortunately, are left out this time.)

This re-release boasts a 36-character roster featuring beloved characters from both SNK and Capcom franchises. Expect to see favorites like Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui (Fatal Fury), the Mars People (Metal Slug), Tessa (Red Earth), and Capcom stalwarts Ryu and Ken (Street Fighter). SVC Chaos's return is a monumental event, especially considering its 2003 debut. SNK's early 2000s bankruptcy and subsequent acquisition by Aruze, combined with difficulties transitioning from arcades to home consoles, delayed its resurgence for over two decades.

Despite this long absence, SVC Chaos's dedicated fanbase remained. Its unique gameplay and character roster left an undeniable mark. This re-release celebrates that legacy and acknowledges the enduring passion of its fans, introducing a new generation to this legendary clash of titans.

Capcom's Future Crossover Plans

In a recent interview with Dexerto, Street Fighter 6 producer Shuhei Matsumoto discussed Capcom's vision for future crossover titles. He revealed the team's ambition to create a new Marvel vs. Capcom or a new Capcom/SNK collaboration, but stressed the significant development time and effort required.

Matsumoto emphasized Capcom's immediate focus: "What we can do now is at least reintroduce these past legacy games to a new audience, to people who may not have had the opportunity to play them on modern platforms." He sees these re-releases as a crucial step towards building anticipation for future projects.

Regarding the Marvel vs. Capcom re-releases, Matsumoto explained that years of negotiations with Marvel finally culminated in their return. He credits the community's passion and the success of EVO-style tournaments as key factors in reigniting interest. The stage is now set for these classic games to shine anew on modern platforms.
