Switch Exclusive: Top GBA & NDS Games Revealed!
A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on the often-overlooked Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Unlike the readily available Nintendo Switch Online GBA titles, this list highlights ten exceptional games found outside the subscription service. Four GBA and six DS gems, presented without ranking.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA version is a solid alternative. A worthwhile comparison, offering a potentially more streamlined experience. Steel Empire remains enjoyable regardless of the platform, even appealing to those who typically avoid shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action title, the first in an excellent series, might have some initial rough edges, but these are smoothed out in later installments. Start here, and feel free to progress through the series.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A Mega Man double-feature, justified by the distinct gameplay styles of Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries in this series see diminishing returns, the original offers substantial enjoyment.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection offers multiple worthwhile titles, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it's even preferred over the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is incredibly engaging. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

Initially a cult hit with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge saw wider success on DSiWare. This title solidified Shantae's popularity, leading to continued appearances across generations. Its origins are somewhat ambiguous, stemming from an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA game in its origins (though not initially localized), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptionally strong, though later installments also hold merit.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you must use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your own death. A captivating experience that deserves recognition.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. While ports exist, the Switch version serves as a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional game.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow stands out due to improved button controls over the original touch controls. However, all three games are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS systems, but the Switch adaptation is surprisingly playable. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, and Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a worthwhile experience despite its complexities.
