CONS
Few games, outside of esports, will ever hit 480Hz
The Asus ROG Swift PG27AQDP is a standout choice for 1440p gaming. As mentioned in my review, it's one of my favorite 2K gaming monitors. With G-Sync compatibility, a 480Hz refresh rate, and a 0.03ms response time, it's incredibly fast without sacrificing image quality.
Featuring a WOLED panel, it offers infinite contrast and high peak brightness. Its design helps prevent burn-in, and it's backed by a three-year warranty. While reaching 480Hz is challenging outside of esports, the high refresh rate enhances clarity with Asus's 240 Extreme Low Motion Blur mode.
Despite lacking a quantum dot layer, it achieves excellent brightness and color performance. Although its out-of-box calibration isn't as tight as some QD-OLED models, it's still impressive and can be further refined with a colorimeter.
This monitor offers a perfect balance of picture quality and performance, making it an excellent choice for gamers not yet ready for 4K.

CONS
Some text warping
No dedicated sRGB mode
The Acer Predator X34 OLED is the ultimate choice for ultrawide gaming with G-Sync support. Its 34-inch OLED panel with an immersive 800R curve offers a breathtaking gaming experience. This deep curve enhances immersion but may cause slight text warping, making it less ideal for productivity.
With flawless G-Sync compatibility and a 3440x1440 resolution, it's easier to maintain high frame rates, ensuring smooth gameplay. The monitor's out-of-box calibration and infinite contrast deliver stunning visuals, while its peak brightness of 1,300 nits makes HDR content pop.
Although it lacks a dedicated sRGB mode, it includes a P3 mode for accurate color representation, making it suitable for content creation as well as gaming. The extra screen space is particularly useful for video editing.
Overall, the Acer Predator X34 OLED is an exceptional choice for gamers and creators alike, especially those who appreciate an immersive curved display.
What to Look for in a G-Sync Gaming Monitor
Nvidia's G-Sync technology comes in three forms: G-Sync Ultimate, G-Sync, and G-Sync Compatible. Understanding the differences is crucial before making a purchase.
G-Sync Ultimate and G-Sync require a dedicated hardware module within the monitor, ensuring smooth motion across the entire refresh rate range. G-Sync Ultimate adds HDR and wide color gamut support, undergoing extensive testing to meet the highest performance standards.
G-Sync Compatible monitors use the VESA Adaptive Sync standard and do not require a G-Sync module, making them more affordable. However, they only support refresh rates down to 40Hz, and some may have higher minimum rates. Nvidia provides a database of certified specifications to help you choose the right monitor.
While G-Sync Compatible monitors might have issues at very low frame rates, most certified monitors can maintain smooth gameplay at 48Hz or above, which is achievable on 1080p and 1440p displays. For the smoothest experience at any frame rate, opt for a G-Sync or G-Sync Ultimate monitor.
G-Sync Monitor FAQs
Is it worth getting a G-Sync Ultimate monitor?
If you're using an Nvidia graphics card, a G-Sync monitor is highly recommended. G-Sync Ultimate offers the best performance with HDR and ultra-smooth gameplay, but it's pricier. While it's a desirable feature at the high end of the market, it shouldn't be the sole deciding factor. Focus on a monitor's overall specs and reviews for a more comprehensive assessment.
Is G-Sync better than FreeSync?
Both G-Sync and FreeSync aim to synchronize your display's refresh rate with your gaming device's frame rate. They use the same VESA Adaptive-Sync standard, offering similar performance and often cross-compatibility. G-Sync and G-Sync Ultimate monitors, however, require additional hardware and only work with Nvidia GPUs, which can make them more expensive. The added HDR or color gamut support is more of a bonus than a necessity.
Do I need special hardware to run a G-Sync gaming monitor?
You only need an Nvidia graphics card to use G-Sync. G-Sync Compatible monitors also support AMD FreeSync, working with both GPU brands. However, G-Sync itself is exclusive to Nvidia GPUs, while FreeSync monitors can still use FreeSync with AMD GPUs even if not G-Sync compatible.
When are G-Sync monitors on sale?
The best times to find deals on G-Sync monitors are during major shopping events like Prime Day and Black Friday. You may also find sales during the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and back-to-school season.
