Excitement is building as the renowned Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, gears up to unveil its first major video game. In a recent interview with Business Insider, CEO Travis Willingham hinted that an announcement could be just around the corner, saying it could happen “any day.” While details about the game's title and its connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham assured fans that the development team is diligently working on the project.

Describing the upcoming video game, Willingham shared, "They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria." This suggests players will have a significant impact on the narrative, blending familiar elements with fresh content within the beloved Exandria setting.

Willingham, an actor and one of Critical Role's key figures, co-founded the company with fellow voice acting talents such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. Since its start, Critical Role has expanded into a vast universe, with one of its standout projects being the successful Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

While the video game will complement Critical Role's other ventures, it won't necessarily be a direct continuation of existing storylines. Speaking to Rolling Stone in December 2024, Willingham revealed that the team was in “active pursuit” of creating a Critical Role video game spinoff, noting they were “starting to come to the end of a long road that we’ve been undertaking for the last couple of years.” It remains to be seen whether the game will explore one of the group’s previous campaigns or introduce an entirely new story set in their world.

Originally, the team aimed to announce the game by the end of 2024 or early 2025. As we move into the third month of 2025, the anticipation for an imminent announcement is palpable.

Reflecting on their approach to game development, Willingham told Rolling Stone, “Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem.”

Although a release date for the Critical Role video game has not yet been announced, fans can stay engaged by checking out the initial details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
