Twisted Metal Renewed for Season 3 on Peacock After Showrunner Exit
Twisted Metal Season 3 has reportedly been greenlit by Peacock, but will return without its original showrunner.
An update on the future of PlayStation's Twisted Metal TV adaptation comes from Variety, which confirms more episodes of the Anthony Mackie-led series are in production. A significant change, however, means co-creator and showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith will not be involved moving forward.
The reason for Smith's departure from the video game adaptation project remains unclear. Stepping in as showrunner and executive producer for Season 3 is David Reed, known for his writing work on The Boys, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and The Magicians, under an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television.
The Season 3 renewal follows the Season 2 premiere in July, as the show continues to attract a substantial audience. NBCUniversal reports that the 12-episode season has amassed 993 million minutes of viewing time so far.
Twisted Metal first brought iconic PlayStation characters to television with its Season 1 debut in 2023. Mackie stars as John Doe, alongside characters like Calypso, Agent Stone, and Mr. Grimm, played by Anthony Carrigan, Thomas Haden Church, and Richard de Klerk, respectively. Of course, the franchise mascot Sweet Tooth, portrayed by Joe Seanoa and voiced by Will Arnett, is also a key part of the series.
While the Twisted Metal franchise hasn't seen a major video game release in 13 years, Peacock is continuing to bring its chaotic vehicle combat to streaming audiences. Co-creators Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick return as executive producers for Season 3, with Arnett and Marc Forman also on board via Electric Ave. Mackie will return as an executive producer through Make It Gravy Productions. They are joined by Inspire Entertainment's Jason Spire, Artists First's Peter Principato, PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, and Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hermen Hulst.
Details on how Twisted Metal Season 3 will continue the story remain under wraps, with the release date and further casting yet to be announced.
