Hyper Light Breaker offers players a diverse array of options, including a wide selection of characters known as Breakers, each with their own unique playstyles. These Breakers are pivotal in the battle against the Abyss King, adding depth and variety to the gameplay experience.

Unlocking new characters in Hyper Light Breaker is straightforward compared to other roguelikes. However, the game doesn't explicitly detail how to acquire new Breakers, so this guide provides a comprehensive overview of all available characters and the steps to unlock them.

This guide pertains to the early access version of Hyper Light Breaker, which includes only two unlockable characters at launch. We will update this guide as more Breakers become available.

How to Get New Characters in Hyper Light Breaker

To unlock new characters, players must collect Abyss Stones, which drop exclusively from defeating Crowns (bosses). Before facing the Crowns, players need to gather Prisms, which serve as keys to the boss arenas. These can be located on the map by following the golden diamond icon.

After defeating a boss, return to the Cursed Outpost via the teleporter and select the Breaker you wish to unlock. Use your Abyss Stones to unlock the chosen character, making them playable. While there are nine characters in the game, only two are currently unlockable. The method for unlocking the rest of the cast remains uncertain.

Each character in Hyper Light Breaker begins with a SyCom, a crucial item that shapes the character's base stats and core perk, defining their unique playstyle. This is a key factor in choosing which character to play. Here's a detailed look at each character and their playstyles.

Vermillion

Vermillion is the starting character, equipped with the Gunslinger SyCom, which supports ranged combat with a modest stat package. His Rail shots have a chance to crit, and if they do, the next shot is guaranteed to crit as well.

For players who prefer melee combat, Vermillion can unlock the Tank SyCom, which enhances armor upon perfect parries and offers better defensive and melee stats, making it a safer choice overall.

Lapis

Lapis, like Vermillion, starts with a Rail-oriented SyCom called Lightweaver, which boosts Rail shot damage after picking up a Battery (ammo). Her distinguishing feature is the Warrior SyCom, which increases her core stats with each upgrade.

Lapis is formidable with either SyCom, but Warrior significantly amplifies her power over time. With enough upgrades, she can surpass other Breakers in terms of raw stats, turning her into a formidable powerhouse.

Goro

Goro is primarily a ranged character with the Astrologer SyCom, which accelerates the charging of Blade skills while shooting targets. The unlockable Sniper SyCom further boosts his critical hit rate.

Goro fits the archetype of a ranged glass cannon, with high damage potential but lacking defensive capabilities. Mastering Goro requires skill, but his effectiveness in combat can be rewarding for those who can handle his fragility.
