Rogue Loops: A Hades-Inspired Roguelike with a Twist

Rogue Loops, an upcoming indie roguelike dungeon crawler, draws significant inspiration from Hades, particularly in its art style and core gameplay loop. However, it introduces a unique mechanic that sets it apart. While a precise release date remains unannounced, a PC launch is anticipated in early 2025. A free demo is currently available on Steam, offering players a sneak peek.

The roguelike genre's recent surge in popularity has spurred numerous iterations, ranging from action-packed titles like Returnal to classic dungeon crawlers such as Hades and its sequel (currently in early access). Rogue Loops clearly falls into the latter category, boasting a repeatedly explored dungeon with randomized loot and ability upgrades, all presented from a top-down perspective.

Though comparisons to Hades are abundant, fueled by its Steam trailer and demo, Rogue Loops distinguishes itself with a compelling twist: ability upgrades are coupled with distinct downsides. These downsides significantly impact gameplay, potentially altering the entire run.

This mechanic echoes Hades' Chaos Gates, which provide powerful upgrades at the cost of temporary negative effects. However, in Rogue Loops, these "curses" are more pronounced and varied, potentially lasting the entire playthrough.

The game's narrative centers on a family trapped in a deadly time loop. Players navigate five floors of dungeons, battling unique enemies and bosses. Each run unlocks procedurally generated upgrades, enabling players to craft custom builds using a combination of beneficial and detrimental effects.

While a definitive release date is still pending, the Steam page indicates a Q1 2025 launch. Until then, the free demo (offering access to the first floor) and other roguelikes like Dead Cells and Hades 2 provide ample entertainment.
