Vincent D'Onofrio on Wilson Fisk's Movie Absence: 'Caught Up in Rights'
It seems that fans of the iconic Hell's Kitchen villain Wilson Fisk, portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio, will have to temper their expectations for seeing him on the big screen. In a recent candid discussion on the podcast Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz, D’Onofrio shed light on the complex situation surrounding his character's future in the Marvel universe.
"The only thing I know is not positive," D’Onofrio shared, highlighting the challenges Marvel faces in utilizing his character due to ownership issues. "It's a very hard thing to do, for Marvel to use my character. It's a very hard thing to do, because of ownership and stuff." He went on to clarify that his portrayal of Fisk is currently limited to television appearances, ruling out any standalone Wilson Fisk movie or appearances in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. This development might also impact potential plans for a Charlie Cox-led Daredevil movie, where Fisk's presence as the antagonist would be expected.
D’Onofrio first captivated audiences as Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, in the 2015 Netflix series Marvel’s Daredevil. His performance across the show's three seasons, which concluded in 2018 with nearly 40 episodes, has been critically acclaimed and beloved by fans. D’Onofrio brings a deep understanding to his character, drawing inspiration from classic performances to craft a nuanced villain.
In a recent interview with IGN, D’Onofrio elaborated on his influences, particularly admiring the everyman quality in action scenes from actors like Harrison Ford. "Anytime they were in a fight, or they were holding a gun, they looked nervous," he noted, emphasizing the importance of humility in action sequences. He cited Gary Cooper's performance in Sergeant York as a prime example, praising the humility visible in Cooper's eyes during intense scenes. "It's amazing. I think that helps action stuff a lot. We're all very conscious of that."
Currently, fans can catch D’Onofrio reprising his role as Wilson Fisk in Daredevil: Born Again, which is airing weekly on Disney+ and is set to conclude its first season on April 15, 2025.
